General introduction

Autologous blood products (Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or Autologous Whole Blood (AWB)) are used as treatment for patients with Plantar Fasciopathy (PF). Due to studies showing limited evidence and the negative advice of Dutch National Health Care Institute (in Dutch: Zorginstituut Nederland) on this type of treatment for tendinopathy (which led to the decision to not reimburse PRP treatment), the treatment with autologous blood products declined over the past 10 years. Despite this, there is still considerable variation in the use of autologous blood products in patients with PF in clinical practice. This guideline aimed to assess the role and effectiveness of autologous blood products as a treatment in patients with PF.
