Knowledge gaps

Systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials have shown clear benefits of antenatal corticosteroids prior to anticipated preterm birth up to 34+6 weeks of gestation; there is insufficient evidence to support their use from 35+0 weeks gestation.

Further studies of higher quality and larger sample sizes are required to investigate the effects of maternal corticosteroid administration prior to planned caesarean birth at term.

There is insufficient data to recommend on the use of a second course of antenatal corticosteroid therapy in women undergoing caesarean birth.

Studies are required to investigate the effects of antenatal corticosteroids in subgroups of women (for example women with multiple pregnancies and women with diabetes).

Further studies are required to investigate the effects of antenatal corticosteroids on neonatal blood sugar levels and the long-term effects on educational attainment and other health outcomes.
