AAN (American Academy of Neurology) guideline 2009¹:

FVC < 50% OF SNIP < -30 cm H₂O OF MIP < -60 cm H₂O (allen level C bewijs, NB niet bij bulbair, onbetrouwbaar)
OF aangetoonde hypercapnie (pCO₂ > 45 mmHg en/of tcpCO₂ > 50 mmHg en/of tcpCO₂ stijging > 10 mmHg) is starten ongeacht klachten en/of hypoventilatie
