3   SEARCH STRATEGY

The searches were run on 24 November 2015 and 4 December 2015. Medline via Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane (CDSR,DARE, Central were searched. Detailed search strings are given below. Firstly, only English and Dutch systematic reviews and RCTs were sought between the years 2008-2015. The studies were extracted from the systematic review and the most recent systematic review (searched in 2014) was updated. Consequently, comparative observational studies were sought in the updated search.

4   SEARCH RESULTS

In total (both searches combined), the Medline search yielded  1654 hits, while  the search in Embase yielded 2104 hits, Cochrane yielded 170 hits.

After merging the search files into one file and removal of the duplicates 3357 records were screened on title and abstract. Of these 3258 were excluded. The most important reasons for exclusion was that studies were

  1. Patient population
  2. InterventionOf the remaining 99 studies (53 in the systematic review search, 46 in the 2014-2016 search), the full text was retrieved. Based on the full text, 5 systematic reviews were included (table 4.1). The studies included in these systematic reviews were assessed for inclusion in this evidence profile (n=16 included). In addition, 46 additional studies were screened from the 2014-2016 search (table 4.2). From this updated search, 8 studies were included. In total, 24 comparative observational studies were included.
